Canoe and Kayak Coating Abrasion Test

Dan Caouette at Clear Stream Fine Woodworking ran a simple test of coating systems for kayaks and canoes – test pieces with 6 different color systems and 6 clear coatings were tested for abrasion, but also viewed for gloss, polishing qualities and UV-protection. While not scientifically performed the result are very interesting for kayak builders.
Some notions were supported: yes, International Perfection and other two pot urehanes are very good. No, waterbased coatings are not up to it. Yet! New discovery: three pot automotive urethane (sprayed) performed impressively as clearcoat, but the colored version were to soft without a couple of clear coats as protection. A hunch supported: graphite in epoxy makes a very impressive abrasion coat.
