New Njord - Jan Sandberg

"Hi Björn
My summer open-air kayak building project, the Njord, my first kayak is finished. After many hours, most of them creative and fun, the Njord is almost done (have heard that home built kayaks will never be quite done...), 574 cm long, 49,5 cm wide and tipping the scale at approx 20-21 kg. I chose to purchase a kit from Haveriet - thanks Johan for good advice. Njord is mix of many qualities, as you Björn so well explains on the site, and with a retractable skeg, adjustable foot support and knee braces it is really flexible. Have tested i calm as well as rough seas and am very satisfied.
The only disappointment is the hatches - particlarly the forward one. Hard on the wind the kayak goes smoothly through the waves but takes some water over the stem, so the seal is important. After an hour against steep seas I have some water in the forward compartment. Seems hard to get a reliable seal with just an ordinary sealing profile and some nylon webbing. My large hatches does not improve the odds either. I am contemplating some kind of cloth sealing, dry bag type. The seat, backband and hip support are not quite finished yet, but that will have to wait until next year. Thanks Björn for the very well written manual and a superb kayak to develop skills in."

Jan Sandberg
Update 5/10:
One of the comments below asked about the knee support in the top pic, so Jan sent a close up of his "masik-on-demand" solition.
