I reorganized the content on my disc drive the other day and found this somewhat surrealistic dispute with an American patent attorney.
It started a few years ago when Fedex delivered a package for me to sign. In it, I found an envelope with a rather pompous-looking sender address in gold – and a sharp allegation for patent infringement concerning the Fisherman 12 I designed for Seabird Designs. For a moment there I think my heart skipped a beat...
But now, a couple of years later, it seems more ludicrous than scaring and is actually quite amusing to read – if American patent regime ever is amusing (oh, but it is!).
(Might perhaps add that it is, in the first place, not the company nor their attorney I want to target, but a basically flawed patent system.)

Surfing around on kayak and canoe related links I found some interesting films about building birch bark canoes in Canada. I have been there before, but these were new to me:
This is a documentary where Ray Mears build a canoe with traditional methods, materials and tools out in the open on a river bank.
Then I found another contemporary traditional canoe project – informative enough to be a DIY manual!
I found a short color film from 1946 (some of the colors are actually still there!) about a native American family, building their canoe.
...and finally, a charming film about canoe paddling on Canada's lakes and rivers – ending with a short glimpse of a slightly more modern take on the birch bark canoe.
All in all a good way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy and windy day.

Två nya Njord sjösatta under de senaste veckorna – en i Finland:
Hej Björn!
Det är den dagen att sjösatta min Njord i samma år som Finland firar 100 årig självständighetsdagen i Arctic Circle.
Det var fin provkörd bara linor och skädda ännu saknas, men de sätter jag följande.
Njord var som du skrivit: vänder fint, stabil, proaktiv, aerodynamisk, snabb och lätt att paddla, går rakt även utan skädda.
Jag vill tacka dig för denna fin Njord resa!
A great day to get finished my Njord in this year we celebrate our 100 anniversary here in Finland and in the Arctic Circle. The test drive was like you told: turn easily, steady, foreseeable, fast, easy to go, go fine even without fin.
It is without ropes so far, but before winter to come I´ll do it.
I wanna thank You for this shared awesome Njord tour!
Tänään oli suuri päivä saada valmiiksi Njord samana vuonna, kun Suomi juhlii 100 vuotisjuhlaansa.
Koeajo oli mahtava, vaikka köysistö ja evä vielä puuttuivat tältä päivältä.
Njord oli kuvaillun mukainen: kääntyi helposti, vakaa, ennakoitava, pieni tuulivastus, nopea ja kevyt kulkuinen.

Fotot är inskickat av Bengt Ekwall och taget från hans Njord i Valjeviken på gränsen mellan Skåne och Blekinge.
Hösten är en målerisk tid – mumma för designers och illustratörer. Citerat från en akvarellutställning för många år sedan i Halmstad:
"Bland årstiderna är hösten favorit. Slutet av september, oktober och början av november erbjuder ett hisnande ljusspel då färgerna djupnar, det torra gräset får en varm glöd som aldrig under sommaren, snäckskalen lyser vita i sanden och skymningen är blåare än någonsin."
